For the experienced adrenaline chaser, or simply someone who loves adventure and being in nature, there is no greater feeling than stepping foot into raw untamed wilderness. To the less fortunate travellers to these evergreen realms, their expeditions are drenched in horror—a kind of exploration in otherworldly landscapes haunted by dread and terrors. Mike Nock and I went to the south in summer for both of these reasons, only we’d like to see a variant that includes Hacksawed fissured blips. The rest of this article will then gradually pick those stories apart, or rather go into depth where they came from and the overall thoughts on that entry — but also what kind of footing these legends are planting for actual lore.

Most of these stories have been verbally passed on through generations, getting more and more complex the further removed from their source they become. A few narratives will be based on true stories, others are complete fiction — designed to add an element of suspense to the outdoor experience or explain phenomena in nature.
The Haunting of the Old Cabin
For instance, one of the most talked about stories is that of The Old Cabin which can be found on our trails well into Trails Carolina. The cabin is said to have been inhabited by a reclusive family native to the area who vanished without threat from outside forces. The disappearance of the family members are not known, but it is also said that spirits have entwined with it and are so haunted. Hikers Have Long Reported Hearing Ghostly Noises, Seeing Lights Flash On And Off in the Cabin… and a powerful sensation they were not alone. A very few have even reported the apparition of ghostly figures seen in windows — further giving rise to a reputation for hauntings.
- The Vanishing Hiker
In another disturbing story, a hiker disappeared from all traces while exploring one of the more backcountry field locations in Trails Carolina. There was still no sign of the hiker after major searching efforts. The story has become an eerie urban legend that is uttered in hushed tones among lovers of the great outdoors, and there are rumours aplenty about mysterious happenings at that site where his vanishing act allegedly took place. There are those that say his spirit only beckons to other hikers, leading them on in their footsteps towards the same dire end.
- The Whispering Woods
The Whispering Woods is a classic but spooky legend that refers to an area of Trails Carolina where the wind sounds like it speaks aloud. The voices, according to legend, are the tormented souls of men and women forever whispering in the wind. Usual residents of the Whispering Woods have claimed to hear disembodied voices and feel a chill up their spine on some unknown quantity when they became guests, wannabe or not. The story helped plant the seed of its reputation in local legend as being a hotbed of paranormal activity.
- Stories from the Editors
Of course, if you want to experience the supernatural for yourself, these tales can also be an added lure and have taken many seasoned adventurers in search of graveyards or desolate houses. People who have entered these places and lived to tell about it generally report unsettling phenomena that fit in with the legends. A few hikers have recorded a feeling of absolute evil, sudden temperature drops and paranormal activities.
Day hikers report rustling sounds right behind them on the trail, or strange tingles walkign up to the cabin. Likewise, anyone who has wandered into the Whispering Woods will tell you they hear low whispers and feel an incredible energy.
